What is Rosacea?
This is a common and chronic disorder that affects about 16 million people in the US and develops primarily on the skin. It most often appears on the face, but it can also occur on the scalp, ears, neck, hands or chest. The best-known and most common symptom is reddening of the affected area. At first, the redness comes and goes. As the condition progresses, it both becomes more persistent and more noticeable. Visible blood vessels may also develop.
There are four forms of the condition. The first form, which is the most common, is characterized by the reddened skin that was just described. In the second type, the patient develops pimples and bumps along with red skin. In the third form, the affected skin becomes abnormally thick, especially around the nose. If this type is left untreated, the patient can develop rhinophyma in which the nose becomes abnormally bulbous and large. The fourth type is called ocular rosacea and affects the eyes in such a way that they become bloodshot and irritated.
Who is Likely to Develop Rosacea?
Rosacea is most common in people between 30 and 50 years old. While it is more common in women, men tend to develop more severe symptoms. The condition also tends to run in families, and people with Celtic or Scandinavian ancestry are more likely to develop it. Most rosacea patients have fair skin and are often blue-eyed blondes. Many also suffered severe acne during adolescence.
How is Rosacea Treated?
Certain environmental or psychological stimuli called triggers can cause an outbreak or make it worse. Common triggers include the following:
• Extreme changes in temperature
• Too much exposure to the sun
• Strenuous exercise
• Spicy foods
• Hot baths
• Certain prescription medications
As you can imagine, the type and severity of the rosacea will influence the rosacea treatment that is chosen.
