Bellafill is the longest lasting FDA approved injectable filler on the market today.
Bellafill can safely last over 5 years. Bellafill was approved for filling smile lines and acne scars but is also used off-label to volumize your cheeks and other areas. Bellafill should not be used to volumize your lips.
Bellafill’s five-year FDA duration approval was the result of the longest and largest dermal-filler study ever done. 1,008 patients (88.9 % female) in 23 centers in the U.S. received injections of Bellafill in their nasal-labial folds (smile lines). At 5 years, there was 87 % retention. Bellafill (an improved reformulation of Artefill) is comprised of collagen, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres, with 0.3 percent lidocaine for patient comfort.
Bellafill is injected into your skin and over time the body absorbs the collagen leaving PMMA spheres in place to stimulate a collagen tissue matrix and blood vessels. First-time users may need an allergy test to make sure they are not allergic to cow collagen. The incidence of treatment-related adverse events in this study was 11.7 percent. Almost three quarters of those were mild, one quarter moderate, with 2 percent being severe. The most common adverse events were swelling, redness, tenderness, pain, lumpiness, and granulomas.
With shorter acting hyaluronic acid fillers any regrets can be treated with an injection of hyaluronidase, which will quickly dissolve the hyaluronic acid gel. So it is very important to know Bellafill is nonreversible, so any adverse side effects, such as lumps, may last years. However most will resolve with time and proper treatment.
At the end of the Bellafill study, Dr Steven R. Cohen (the lead investigator in the study) noted, 83 percent of participants rated themselves satisfied or very satisfied—and even those who had experienced lumps were almost equally pleased. Dr Cohen stated, “Patients in the study reported better results at five years than at one year. There is an ongoing but steady state of augmentation as the body responds to the PMMA spheres by laying down new collagen. These results should be reassuring to patients who want permanent filler.”
